CANADIAN TOURNAMENT -Calgary - By Annie Rayner There were 238 entries with BC taking first in 11 of the 26 classes. There were lots of complaints about the 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. shifts, and problems getting scorekeepers and judges for these shifts. At the AGM --Victoria won their bid to host the Canadian in 2004. Resolution passed- that the play-offs in the Mens and Womens Championship divisions be eliminated. The entry fee is to be incresed to $ 50. for all players. Only the class winner and everyone in the Championship classes be recognized at the banquet. The rest of the prizes will be given out after their class has completed play.[which they found to be not very efficient or satisfactory and not many got to see this.] President George Barton and Treasurer Dorothy Butts will not be seeking re-election next year. At a Special meeting called on Aug.17/02-a discussion on a new format calling for shoe games for allclasses except for the Championship Classes. At the Canadian - players must sign their score-sheet before leaving the court. Discussion about the poor sportsmanship , not respecting ones opponent and poor court manners that were demonstrated at this tournament. Inducted into the Hall of Fame --Bev Nathe and Diane Canton Personal observations--At the shoe check -in --grinding available; and they checked for names on shirts. -Results were posted almost immediately after the games were over. -Judges were clearly checking for foot fouls. -spectator seating could have been better-especially for the Championship rounds -weather was lousy -camping fees for blacktop camping was high -was nice to see Lou Busch participating. AIR-MILES by Sam Tomasevic No report as could not get into the computer program. PRESIDENTS REPORT by Vince Herkel -Congratulations to all who competed in the World and Canadian. -New in the past year --Jackets with our new BCHA logo ; and our own BCHA domain web site. Some concerns -decreasing memberships ; promotion of Horseshoes ; importance of good leaque programs ; provincial Junior program ; expansion of Clubs into other communities guidelines for joining the BCHA ; existing Clubs that are struggling in large population areas ; number of sanctioned tournaments per year ; poor attendance at some tournaments ; the need for increased revenue to fund the Associations programs and future goals. -Some suggestions -the promotion of Horseshoe pitching in your own communities is very important and the use of local media, newspapers, radio, television, and working with other community groups can have great benefits. Horseshoe pitching should be promoted as a fun, healthy, social, competitive and relatively inexpensive sport for all ages. League programs give members a good reason to come out and play, and then come out on a weekly basis. Special evening or week-end events add to the fun and social aspect. Re the juniors -I have approached our local Boys and Girls Club about incorporating horseshoes into their programs and they were very receptive. I have a list of all the Boys & Girls Clubs in BC . New avenues for funding will have to be explored. We do have some excellent clubs in the BCHA, which offer a lot in the way they work at promoting horseshoes, membership drives, junior and league programs, and successful tournaments. With the support of all the Clubs in BC we will continue to work at making the BCHA stronger and better in years to come. OLD BUSINESS -none NEW BUSINESS [a] MOTION Fred Ormiston / Munj Manhas 'that the BCHA dues be increased by $ 3.00 per year [ to $13. ]' vote taken.-16 for , 5 against. - carried. [b] The annual Insurance fee is to be divided equally amongst all clubs. The Treasurer will get the amount and then send bills to all clubs. [c] Dues for those members who do not belong to a Club, because there is no Club within a 25 mile radius -will increase to $20. [ $13. -BCHA ; $ 7.- insurance ] [d] Marcel Pinette stated that the Chilliwack club will be up and running again next year with 24 courts. [e] Sam NEEDS more information , letters ,etc. for the Newsletter [f] Re-the proposal from Andre Leclerc / Jack E.Adams to change the Canadian Tournament to all shoe games except for the Championship classes.
