SENIOR GAMES --Chilliwack is putting in 12 permanent courts and will have 4 or 8 portables. CANADIAN TOURNAMENT -Saint John, NB WORLD TOURNAMENT --Eau Claire , Wisconsin AIR MILES -not available PRESIDENTS REPORT -Vince Herkel The days are longer, spring is in the air,and most BCHA clubs are getting their horseshoe pitching facilities ready for yet another fun-filled season of horseshoe pitching. I would like to encourage all of our BCHA Clubs to do their best at promoting the sport of horseshoe pitching in their respective communities. Attracting new players to this sport is a challenge for most clubs and I am sure many avenues have already been explored. Many community newspapers have weekly free listings for service clubs and sporting groups telling about event times, locations and a name and contact phone number. Posters on public notice boards,at recreation and sport centres,Senior centres, and other organization facilities such as Legions,Eagles, etc.will be visible and hopefully seen by many individuals. Local media is invaluable.Always invite your local sports editor or reporter to your facility to cover a story on either a work party, your official league play opening night,a special event or a heads up story about the sport of horseshoe pitching. Promotional material can make a difference and to fill this need, Past -president Sam has put together some historical information about horseshoe pitching ,which he will make available to Clubs upon request. Attracting Juniors is even more of a challenge for most clubs, and having juniors in your club can be a result of having mom and dad being club members or having a very resourceful member dedicated to setting up a Juniors League program. Inviting local school Physical Education Classes to come out and try throwing horseshoes for even an hour introduces young people to the sport of horseshoe pitching, and some may like it enough to come out to your league night. Earle Gillard , our northern BCHA Rep, will again be looking for your support for the Provincial on line Juniors tournament. Well organized leagues are important to keeping members coming out on a weekly basis. A few years ago, Rudy, a computer programmer friend, helped me put together a computerized league stats program, which we have now decided to make available to any club who wishes to use it. Let me know if you want a copy. If you need any materials such as score pads, round robin cards, master summary sheets, ringer % books, horseshoes ,jackets ,and/or crests, get hold of vice-president Syd Anderson. M&M and Canflip horseshoes should be arriving soon. Please remember that the BCHA Membership dues are now $13, except for Juniors, which are free. All clubs should have received their insurance notices by now, which, due to the rising Insurance rates, has been set at $100. per club. Please encourage your members to subscribe to the BCHA newsletter the Ringer Round-up. Sam will gladly accept articles and pictures. The BCHA 2003 sanctioned tournament schedule is in full swing. The first two, Abbotsford and Cloverdale were well attended. I would like to see more BCHA members support the tournaments ,as the host clubs put forward a great amount of effort in getting them organized, and a good time is usually enjoyed by those attending. I would also like to encourage all host clubs to put in some added prize money, no set limit, as it is always good to give back a little extra to the players who also support the host clubs concessions, draws or raffles. Have a great 2003 horseshoe Pitching season and I hope to see many of you at the BC International in Winfield and the BC Championships in Victoria.
