HORSESHOE AWARENESS

In February 2001 the Victoria Horseshoe Club put on a demonstration and information session at a local mall. The goal of this undertaking was "Awareness". To make our community aware that we are here and are an important part of the sport's scene in Victoria.

There was a portable court set up (one end only for safety purposes) where we demonstrated how to pitch and allowed the public to try it out. There was a TV and VCR set up with tapes running the whole three days of past Canadian Championships and other Horseshoe Tournaments. There were lots of visual horseshoe related material, picture collage, posters, etc. There was printed material on hand and passed out. Articles on How To Build A Horseshoe Court, or Several Courts, How to Hold and Pitch a Horseshoe, Horseshoe Canada official rules for the game, and information about the Victoria Horseshoe Club and it's programs. All of our members wore whites and club colors while on duty at the mall; they were enthusiastic and did a great job. It was a huge success.

Hundreds of people who did not know horseshoes were pitched in an organized way here in Victoria now know that they are. We held the demonstration for three days, two from 9:30A.M. to 9:00P.M. and one day from 9:30A.M. to 5:30P.M. Our members worked in two-hour shifts with two to four people on each shift. So it took a lot of involvement from our members.

We took advantage of free advertising that is offered to non-profit organizations. Radio stations that have a time of the day (and some twice a day) to advertize up coming community events, small local papers who have the same, community papers, posters etc.

Awareness pograms are a major goal for the Victoria Club this year and several clinics are planned for the next few months. We hope to increase our membership, but this was not the main goal. "AWARENESS" is our main goal.
